Motorcycle taxis (locally called moto) are a primary mode of transport in Rwanda. Now, startups like Ampersand and SafiMoto are electrifying the sector, reducing emissions, fuel costs, and air pollution in urban areas.

Local Assembly and Charging Networks

Ampersand assembles e-motos locally in Kigali and operates battery-swap stations where drivers exchange batteries in under 2 minutes. This model lowers upfront cost and avoids long charging delays. 

Saving Costs, Earning More 

E-moto drivers save up to 40% on fuel and maintenance, meaning more take-home income. Over 1,000 electric motorcycles are already in use, and the sector is scaling rapidly with government support. 

Climate and Health Benefits

Rwanda aims to reduce transport emissions by 16% by 2030. E-motos contribute directly to this target while also improving urban air quality. 

With a strong regulatory framework and digital innovation, Rwanda is emerging as a leader in clean, inclusive transport and setting a precedent for East Africa.
