TymeBank: South Africa’s Digital Banking Disruptor

Banking with a Smile – and No Branches

TymeBank, South Africa’s first fully digital bank, has rewritten the rules of banking by eliminating traditional branches and offering low cost, high convenience services. Since its 2019 launch, TymeBank has onboarded 10 million customers, many of them previously unbanked.

A Mobile-First Approach

Customers can open an account in under five minutes using a TymeBank kiosk in retailers like Pick n Pay. These accounts come with no monthly fees, instant saving, and real-time transfers, all accessed via mobile app or USSD.

A Profitable Digital Bank

By early 2025, TymeBank became one of the first African neobanks to reach profitability, thanks to a low operating cost model and strong customer retention. Its lending arm and merchant products have become key revenue drivers.

Global Expansion and Investment

TymeBank is part of the Tyme Group, which has expanded to the Philippines and secured $180 million in investment from Tencent, CDC Group, and Apis Partners. Plans are underway to enter new African Markets including Ghana and Zambia.

A Future-Ready Financial Institution

By combining financial literacy, digital efficiency, and smart partnerships, TymeBank represents a scalable solution to Africa’s underbanking crisis.
