Morocco’s Argan Oil Sector: Sustainability Meets Luxury

The Tree of Life

In the dry southwest of Morocco, argan trees grow in arid soil where little else can thrive. For centuries, Berber women have harvested their fruits to produce argan oil, a prized ingredient in cosmetics and cuisine.

Women-Led Cooperatives

Today over 3,000 women’s cooperatives produce argan oil using traditional and modern techniques. These cooperatives provide jobs, literacy programs, and health support transforming lives in rural communities.

Eco-Certification and Exports

With support from the Moroccan government and EU, many cooperatives are now certified organic and fair-trade, allowing them to export to high end markets in Europe, the U.S., and Asia.

Protecting the Ecosystem

The argan forests are now UNESCO biosphere reserve, protected from overharvesting and deforestation. Revenues from oil sales fund tree planting, water conservation, and biodiversity preservation.

Nature’s Economy

Morocco’s argan story shows how ancient traditions and sustainable agriculture can thrive in a global luxury market while protecting unique ecosystems.
