Lesotho’s Textile Sector: Women-Led Factories Driving Exports

A Small Country with a Big Stitch

Lesotho may be landlocked and small, but its textile and garment sector is one the largest employers in Southern Africa providing over 45,000 jobs mostly to women. The sector exports to the U.S under AGOA (African Growth and Opportunity Act) and to South Africa under regional trade agreements.

Women at the Forefront

Most Garment workers in Lesotho are women from rural areas, many of whom are primary breadwinners. Factories such as Nien Hsing, Formosa textiles, and C&Y Garments have implemented skills development and financial literacy programs that empower workers beyond the factory floor.

Exporting to Major Brands

Lesotho’s factories supply major global brands such as Levi’s, Walmart, The Children’s Place, and Gap. Its competitive labor costs, trade access, and established logistics links make it an attractive manufacturing base.

Moving Toward Value Addition

The country is now investing in textile mills, dyeing factories, and fashion design training, aiming to go beyond basic stitching to full garment finishing and branding.

A Model for Industrial Employment

Lesotho’s textile industry offers a blueprint for inclusive growth in Africa anchored in exports but delivering local skills, jobs, and dignity.
