Tolokazi Craft Brewery: Redefining African Beer with a Xhosa Twist

Meet Africa’s First Black Woman Master Brewer

Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela, founder of Tolokazi Craft Brewery, South Africa’s first black woman to own and operate a craft brewery. Blending science, tradition, and cultural pride, her business is making waves in a male dominated industry, and creating space for African identity in beer.

Brewing Culture and Quality

Launched in 2020 in Gauteng, Tolokazi fuses local ingredients and traditional fermentation techniques with modern craft brewing. The lineup includes sorghum-based beers, umqombothi (a traditional Xhosa brew), and contemporary lagers all with proudly African branding.

A Business Rooted in Heritage

Apiwe holds a Master Brewer qualification from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling in the UK and is passionate about showcasing African flavors to global markets. The brand is named after her Xhosa clan name, “Tolokazi,” meaning matriarch.
Her brewery employs local women and youth, creating jobs while promoting skills in brewing science.

Distribution and Recognition

Tolokazi’s beers are available in over 60 outlets across South Africa and have begun exporting to Europe. The brand has earned accolades from the African Beer Cup and the South African Breweries Foundation.

Raising the Bar for Diversity

Through Tolokazi, Apiwe is not just crafting beer, she’s building a legacy of representation and excellence in African food and beverage innovation.
