Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, Jayden Adams has passed away after he allegedly took his own life at his home on Saturday, 11 July in Stellenbosch.
The 25-year-old had recently returned from the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
Just two weeks ago, Adam was mourning the passing of his 72-year-old grandmother, Marianna Adams, a day before the Bafana game against Czechia at Atlanta Stadium.
Brendine Johnson, Adams’ mentor, spoke to the Siya crew on behalf of the family, delivering an emotional statement.
“This passing has ripped everybody apart, returning from the World Cup just now, and then got such news, you know. I had a close conversation with him on Thursday, the guy was really positive on returning back, and being able to return after the World Cup and go, you know, being a CAF champion, knowing what lies ahead, he was prepared. He doesn’t waste time away, being at home with his family.”
“So at this moment, I don’t even have words to say, but we ask that the family’s privacy be respected. Yes, I can tell you that he passed on. Nobody expected this,” Johnsons said.
CAF President and Mamelodi Sundowns Chairman, Patrice Motsepe has expressed deep condolences over the loss of the young midfielder.
In a statement released through the CAF official website, Motsepe described the news as deeply saddening and extended his sympathies to Adams’s family, friends, teammates, and the entire South African football community.
Adams had established himself as a promising talent in South African football at Stellebosch FC before earning his place in both the Mamelodi Sundowns squad and the national team setup. His performances at the recent World Cup highlighted his growing influence at the highest level of the game.
